Obituary For James Edward Calhoun

Carter Funeral Home announces the transition of Rev. James Edward Calhoun,86,of Union Springs,Alabama.

Born May 16,1930, this servant leader and longtime pastor transitioned into eternity, May 8,2017 at his Johnson Street residence in Union Springs.

Celebration of Life Services will be held Tuesday, May 16,2017 at 11:00 am from the sanctuary of the Second Baptist Church,Thompson Community. The pastor, Ibrahim K. Lee will officiate the services. The eulogy will be delivered by Rev. James N.Robbins,Sr.,pastor of the Mt.Zion and Mt. Coney Baptist Churches.

Interment will follow in the Second Baptist. Cemetery.

Rev. Calhoun will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to Celebration of Life Services.

Visitation for family and friends will be held Monday, May 15,2017 from 2:00 pm until 7:00. pm at Carter Funeral Home.

Rev. James Edward Calhoun was born May 16, 1930 in Union Springs, AL to the late Mr. James Henry Calhoun and Mrs. Effie B. Calhoun. He confessed Christ at an early age and became a life-long member of Second Baptist Church, Thompson Community, Union Springs, Alabama.

He received his secular education from Bullock County Public School System. He received his religious education at an early age at Second Baptist Church.

Rev. Calhoun accepted his call to ministry and faithfully served as an undershepherd for many years. He pastored a church in Chicago, IL. Later he relocated to Alabama where he pastored several churches: Mt. Olive, St. Mark, Dawson and Mt. Zion (China Grove) Baptist Churches for forty years until his health began to fail.

Rev. Calhoun was also preceded in death by: three brothers, Samuel J. Calhoun, Rev. Major Lee Calhoun and Rev. Nathaniel Calhoun, Sr.; one sister, Bessie Mae Surles; one daughter, Carolyn Turner; two grandchildren, Ishmael A. Calhoun and Rasheik Calhoun; one brother-in-law, James Lyons; motherin-law, Martha Moultrie; three wives, Bernice Calhoun, Estelle Calhoun and Tommie Calhoun.

He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving wife, Nettie B. Calhoun; five daughters, Brendolyn Moore, Denise Calhoun, both of Los Angeles, CA, Estereleta Calhoun, Opelika, AL, Annette Fitzpatrick, Auburn, AL and Nadine Moultrie, Atlanta, GA; two sons, Minister James Edward Calhoun II, Inglewood, CA and Louis J. (Diane) Murry, Union Springs, AL; one special grandson he raised, Surrey Calhoun; two sisters, Johnnie Mae Calhoun Burt, Saginaw, MI and Effie Jean Calhoun Lyons, Union Springs, AL; three brothers, Morris (Diana) Calhoun, Sr., Union Springs, AL, Johnny Lee (Fannie) Calhoun, Chicago, IL and Minister Melvin (Yvonne) Calhoun, Saginaw, MI; four sistersin-law, Mattie Calhoun, Catherine Calhoun, both of Saginaw, MI, Lisa Calhoun and Sara Nell Coleman, Union Springs, AL; twenty-four grandchildren, forty-two great-grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many more other relatives and friends.
