Carter Funeral Home announces the transition of Mrs Letha M. Foster of Midway,Alabama.

Mrs Foster, a devoted community advocate and servant transitioned into eternity,Sunday,,April,30,2017 in the supportive comfort of her family in Birmingham,Alabama.

Celebration of Life Services will be held Sunday,May 7,2017 at 1:00pm from the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Midway, located on Public Street and Old Troy Road. Words of comfort will be delivered by Rev. Samuel Coleman, pastor.

Interment will follow in the St. Luke AME Church Cemetery, Enon Community.

Mrs. Foster will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to Celebration of Life Services.

Visitation for family and friends will,be held Saturday May 6,2017 from 2:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Carter Funeral Home

Letha Mae Crymes Foster was She was born May 15, 1934 in Midway, AL, Bullock County to the late Mr. N. Davis Crymes, Mrs. O.B. Ellison Crymes. The late Deacon Fred Rogers and Marzie Rogers, Letha's adopted parents. Her siblings were N. Davis, Jr. (deceased), Charlie Edd, Inell, Mildred, Hildred (deceased), James, Ola Mae (deceased), Claudia Mae, Moses (deceased), Hosea and Tommy (deceased).

On Month Day and Year, she married Daniel (Dan) Foster in Midway, AL. Seven beautiful children were made under this union, Jimmie, Gennie, Willie, Aletha, Danny, Virginia and LaTina.

At an early age, Letha accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Midway, AL. She served her church as: President of Choir and BTU, taught Sunday School, was President of the Pastor's Aide Committee. She completed eleventh grade at Merritt High School in Midway, AL. She earned her high school diploma through Auburn University Adult classes in 1977. Her continuing education included classes through Organized Community Action Program (OCAP) and the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service programs in Union Springs, AL, under the leadership of Mrs. Nannie Rhodes. She was employed by OCAP on June 18, 1968. Her position, OCAP Bullock County Coordinator.

In 1998, Letha was the first African American woman from Midway, AL to qualify and run for county commissioner and made a good showing at her first attempt for public office. Letha, a member of the Bullock County Historical Society, worked with others to get historical marker for Old Merritt School, Midway Community Center. On March 19, 1999, she was the key person in getting the First Missionary Baptist Church on the Alabama Register of Landmarks. She also was the key person in getting historical markers erected for the church on April 5, 2000. On May 5, 2000, Letha retired from OCAP with thirty-two years of service. On October 2, 2000, Mayor James T. Graham and City Council of the Town of Midway took their oath of office, administered to each official by Letha Mae Foster, a notary public for the State of Alabama. On August 23, 2001, Letha became an Alabama Silver – Haired Legislator for District 82 for Macon and Bullock Counties. Her position was Advocate on behalf of seniors. In her retirement, she was still active in the Town of Midway. She was awarded a certificate for being a certified member of the Alabama Association of Volunteer Firefighters in Midway. She has assisted in helping fight fires three times in Midway. Her vehicle had a firefighter's tag. She would enable her vehicle to transport a person to a hospital in an emergency situation. On August 8, 2002, Letha was featured on the local cable television channel 23, Bullock County Chamber of Commerce: "The Pride of Bullock County". The Chamber pointed out with pride the accomplishments of Letha in the business of helping people "better their conditions in living". Letha continued her life of service until her health changed in 2010.

Letha Mae Foster entered into eternal life on April 30, 2017 in Birmingham, AL. She was preceded in death by, one son, Jimmie Lee Foster of Buffalo, NY and one sister, Ola Mae. She leaves to cherish her legacy: her children, Gennie Mae Jackson, Columbus, GA, Willie Mae Hamon, Midland, GA, Aletha Foster, Houston, TX, Dannye Cunningham, Birmingham, AL and LaTina Foster, Union Springs, AL; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.
