Christine R. Simpson

Christine Robinson Simpson, a native of Pell City, AL, was born to honest, hard working parents, Hillie and Blanche Chandler Robinson. Christine was the youngest of seven siblings: Marie, Channie, Nellie, Lee, Chandler (Bubba), Otis and Sammy. She was born September 18, 1927, and gained her eternal wings on Thursday, February 11, 2021. At an early age, Christine gave her heart to God and joined the Rocky Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Silas Woods. After graduating from St. Clair County Training School, she continued her education and graduated from Alabama State University, Montgomery, AL, where she earned a Bachelor of Education and Master’s Degree in English and Voice. In 1951, Christine was initiated into the Beta Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She was a standout on the women’s basketball team and often returned to ASU for the various Hornets games and Classics. While attending Alabama State University, Christine met Howze Livingston Simpson, the love of her life. They were joined in Holy Matrimony, and she relocated to Lanett, AL, Howze’s hometown. Christine united with the Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1954 and was a faithful and loyal member. She was very active in numerous church affiliations including: Bible Study, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, the September Birth Month Ministry, Golden Agers and the Missionary Society. For fifteen years, she served as Chairperson of the Church Anniversary Program Committee. She worked tirelessly in that capacity, taking great pride in every detail of the celebration. Christine was a charter member of the Lambda Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in Lanett, AL, where she served as Basileus for several terms.

She received the Outstanding Service Award in Education and All Mankind, February 2004, Golden Age Pioneer Award for devoted and dedicated Christian service and Golden Soror Award for fifty-six years membership. In 2020, she was named a Pearl for her seventy plus years as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Christine had more than twenty years of service with the Chattahoochee Hospice, where she served on the Board of Directors. She was a volunteer Pink Lady at Lanier Memorial Hospital and a community volunteer with The Literacy Program of America. Christine was employed by the West Point, GA Board of Education and after the merging, the Troup County Board of Education in LaGrange, GA. She was an advocate for her students in West Point, GA, and was an inspiration to many through her care and concern. Christine retired after more than forty years of distinguished service as an educator. Christine was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband of forty-nine years, Howze, and her six siblings. She is survived by a host of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Christine had many friends in Pell City, AL as well as in Lanett, AL and West Point, GA, who were all very special to her. The kindness shown by all of them will always be remembered, especially the kindness of her neighbor, Mrs. Sharolyn Trammell, who was always there in every way.

Due to inclement weather, a Private Funeral Service for Mrs. Christine R. Simpson has been scheduled for Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. ET in the M.W. Lee Mortuary’s Chapel, 1304 E. 10th Street, West Point, GA 31833. The Dr. Jesse J. Walker, II, Eulogist and Rev. Walter L. Darden, Sr., Assisting.

Interment will take place immediately following the Funeral Service in the Hillcrest Garden Cemetery, Lanett, AL.

Public viewing will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the mortuary.

Final Arrangements are entrusted to M. W. Lee Mortuary of West Point, GA.
