SSgt (Retired) Dewitt Covington was born October 28, 1939 in Adel, Cook County, Georgia to Rossie and Alma B. Covington. On Saturday, December 12, 2020, God embraced Dewitt and called him to his Heavenly home. He departed this life at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Georgia.
Dewitt was educated in the Cook County School System and enlisted into the U.S. Army on November 4, 1959 and served until May 31, 1981. During those years of active duty, he served in the Vietnam War. He was also stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. Upon returning in 1972, Dewitt was stationed at Ft. Benning/Columbus, GA. While there, he was deployed to the Iran Conflict from August 1978 and safely returned home in February 1979. After retiring from the U.S. Army, Dewitt began another career with Civil Service where he worked for 20 years and retired a second time. While Active Duty, Dewitt received the Army Commendation Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars. Dewitt confessed Christ as his personal Savior and was a devoted member of St. James C.M.E Church. While there, Dewitt was affectionately known as “Bro Covington” as well as “D.C.” He served faithfully as Treasurer of the Board of Christian Education and Formation; Member of the Trustee Board, Usher Board, Male Chorus and Chairman of the Benevolent Committee.
Those left to cherish his memories include a Devoted Daughter and Son-In-Law, Karen and Arthur Tobias, III; three Grandchildren, Donald Graham, III, who preceded him in death; Jasmine Graham and Toby Tobias; One Brother, Curtis Covington (Mary Ellen); One Sister, Gealene Smith (7 brothers and sisters that preceded him in death) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
