Obituary For Rev. James Ervin Whitted

Rev. James Ervin Whitted answered the gentle call of his Savior’s voice on Sunday, October 25, 2020. He was born on March 29, 1934 to the late Mr. George Whitted and Mrs. Beulah Torain Whitted in Durham, North Carolina.

He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and became a member of Lattisville Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Hurdle Mills, North Carolina under the leadership of the late Rev. E. Chavis. He attended Central High School in Hillsborough, North Carolina before moving to Brooklyn, New York.

A talented and inspirational vocalist, he was asked to become the lead singer of a gospel group—The Sensational Morning Doves. He would go on to make several recordings, traveling across the country singing about the goodness of the Lord. It was during one of these singing engagements that he met the love of his life--Sadie Howard, whom he affectionately called “Doll”. They were united in Holy Matrimony in 1960. To this union two children were born.

Never forgetting his upbringing, he and his wife joined the St. Phillips Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York under the leadership of the late Rev. Eugene Peterkin. Here he served as a Deacon until the Lord called and assigned him to preach. Rev. Whitted would later become the Pastor of Bel Mount Baptist Church where he served until he retired in 1999.

Upon retirement, he and his wife relocated to his place of birth in North Carolina. They then joined Lattisville Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. George Crew III and served faithfully until relocating to Montgomery, Alabama to live with their children. In Montgomery, he and his wife joined St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Sylvester Bruce until his death.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years; his parents; twin sisters, Lucille Whitted Rhone and Lucinda Whitted Burton; and, one brother, Steven Whitted.

Rev. James E. Whitted leaves to cherish his loving memories: his devoted children; Mr. Darryl J. Whitted and Ms. Felicia Whitted both of Montgomery, AL; one dear sister, Mrs. Georgia Cates, Mebane, NC; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Patricia Howard, Las Vegan, NV; one special aunt-in-law, Mrs. Geneva Torain, Brooklyn, NY; one special uncle, Sam (Caroline) Torain, Hillsborough, NC; and a host of special nieces and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Graveside Services Celebrating the Life of Rev. James Ervin Whitted will be Sunday, November 1, 2020 1:00 P.M. at Lattisville Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery Hurdle Mills, North Carolina. Pastor George Crews III, Officiant
