Obituary For Mr. Jimmy Winston

Winston, Mr. Jimmy L., a resident of Valley, AL, died Sunday, July 5, 2020 at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, AL.

Graveside Services are scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. (EST) at Rehoboth Baptist Church Cemetery, Valley, AL with Pastor Karanja Story officiating. Davis Memorial Mortuary of Valley directing.

Public Viewing is scheduled for Friday, July 10, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. from Davis Memorial Mortuary Chapel.

Jimmy Lewis Winston was born on February 9, 1952 to John L. Winston and Minnie L. DeVance Atkinson in Valley, Alabama. A special soul had been introduced to the world.

Jimmy matriculated through Rehobeth High School where he sustained a fellowship with his Class of 1970. This time was sincerely special as they joined forces on the basketball court under the leadership of Coach Arthur Dunn; nevertheless, the most treasured chapter was starting the courtship with a young lady by the name of Daisy Queen Huguley. The two were inseparable ever since.

Jimmy became a family man and married Daisy Queen. This started his journey of being a hard worker and provider for his household. He immediately joined the U. S. Army in 1971 and contributed service as a Medic. While in Germany, Jimmy decided to shift to his next phase in life while rearing his family together in the United States. He next dedicated over 30 years to Johnson Industries where he received cross country technical training to adequately guide his team as the lead fixer. After the relocation of Johnson Industries, Jimmy joined Milliken and Company. This change would prove most impactful for his future spiritual journey.

In 2006, while leaving work early morning from Milliken, Jimmy had a life altering car accident. The doctors communicated his survival rate was slim. But God…not only did he survive, he decided to live for God and tell everyone about how God brought him through!

It was at this age of 54 that Jimmy gave his life to Christ. He was baptized under the leadership of Pastor Robert L. Jones and joined Rehoboth Baptist Church. Jimmy became an active member –regular attendee of Sunday School, sang in the Male Chorus and Mass Choir, served with the Senior Citizen Ministry, Financial Room Support and became an Ordained Deacon of the church.

He took his role as a Christian seriously and never hesitated to share with the local community or a perfect stranger at any given time (grocery store, especially Givorn’s Foods, sporting events, banks, etc.) just how good God had been to him and his family.

The sanctuaries will miss his voice saying, “Preach Preacher!” or “What it say Preacher?!” as he was always vocally supporting the surrounding Pastors and Preachers as they proclaimed the Word of God.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Linda Burton and one son, Kevin Griggs. On the morning of July 5, 2020, God called his servant home at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama with his wife, Daisy Queen, by his side.

He leaves to cherish the moments of laughter, joy and sweet memories to: his devoted wife of 48 years, Daisy Queen Winston; four children—three sons, Dr. Sherman (Tonya) Winston, Tryman Merrell (Denise) Winston and Ryan Nakia (Sophronia) Winston; one daughter, Courtney (Michael) Winston; siblings, Geraldine Strickland, Regina Atkinson, Cassandra (John) Brown, JaCalvin (Lynn) Atkinson, Kevin Williams and Steve (Tasha) Atkinson; a host of grandchildren with whom he made an impact as their dear “Granddaddy”, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and community friends.
