“If I can put one touch of rosy sunset into the life of any boy or girl, I feel I have worked with God.”

July 6, 1930 - January 5, 2020

The above lines express the philosophy of Mary Lois Chambers Roberts, as a Christian, mother, mentor, and a teacher, who planned and worked to improve and elevate the lives of the youth whom she touched. She was born on July 6, 1930, to the late Mary L. Anderson and the late Clarence Chambers in Pine Grove, Chambers County, AL. She was raised by her grandmother, the late Daisy Lee Booker and grandfather, the late Ervin Booker, Sr.

She confessed her hope and faith in Christ at the age of fifteen and joined the Rehoboth Missionary Baptist Church in August 1945, under the leadership of then pastor, Rev C. L. Williams. There she served as chairperson of the Sunday School program committee, choir member, Red Circle Director, YWA, Secretary of the Women’s Missionary Society, Assistant Counselor of the Matron Circle, and church clerk.

Her education had its beginnings in a rural community starting at the Pine Grove Elementary School, then advancing to the Rehobeth Jr. High School, Fairfax, AL and finally an urban environment at the Lanier High School, Lanett, AL. Believing that one must “study to shew thyself approved unto God,” (2 Timothy 2:15), she received her B.S. degree from Alabama State University, Montgomery, AL in 1955.

She then started a career in secondary education in the Chambers County public school system that lasted 30 years and included Five Points High School, Five Points, AL; Rehobeth High School, Fairfax, AL; and concluding at Valley High School, Valley, AL. She loved her work and showed her love and appreciation for her co-workers and students.

On December 20, 1960, Mary Lois made a lifelong commitment of love and faithfulness to Dewey Roberts, Jr.(who preceded her in death) in a beautiful Christian wedding ceremony held at the Rehoboth Missionary Baptist Church.

She was a member of the Chambers County Education Association, Chambers County Retired Educators Association, Alabama Education Association, and the National Education Association. She was also a proud member of the Valley Chapter of Alabama State University Alumni Association.

Her civic work included the Fairfax Civic Club, Chambers County Federation of Women and Youth Clubs, Alabama Association of WYC, National Association of Colored Women’s Club and the Rehobeth Heights Improvement Club. She was a member of the A.D. Robinson Order of Eastern Star Chapter 544, and Kappa Delta Beta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.

She leaves beautiful memories to her two sons: Shirra (Valley, AL) and Shirrell (Montgomery, AL); one granddaughter, Brandice Shiretta Fears (Rock Hill, SC); two great-granddaughters, Kilei Lawer and Rilei Lawer (Rock Hill, SC); two sisters, Annie Lois Knight, (Atlanta, GA), and Jessie Ruth Brouden, (Brooklyn, NY); as well as a host of other relatives, friends, co-workers, and students.

She will live on in the memory of those whose lives she touched. For her death is not a benediction; it is a resurrection and now in a fairer land, with finer materials and better working conditions, she will do better, for she will find the last home and last assignment the best.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Mary C. Roberts to Valley Haven School, PO Box 416, Valley, AL 36854; Interfaith Food Closet, 6313 20th Avenue, Valley, AL 36854; or the Alabama Kidney Foundation, 265 Riverchase Parkway East, Suite 106, Birmimgham, AL 35244
